a reminder from

- You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
- You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
- You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
- You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
- You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
- You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence.
- You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.
Abraham Lincolnif only i had known this and taken it to heart sooner in life... i could have saved myself (and others) a lot of pain and heartache. it's hard to know what to do when a friend is in need. it's hard to know how to handle situations and what should be said when. it's hard to know how much help is good, and when that help turns into enabling someone to continue down the road you're trying to help them off of.

What a great post...timely too. I have actually been thinking about some of these things and formulating a post of my own cc. these issues. The line between helping people get over a hump and enabling is definitely very fine.
